Community is critical to language learning success

Starting to learn Chickasaw is an awesome thing! It feels great, knowing that you are fighting for such a great cause, and learning the language of our ancestors. But it can also be very stressful. Going it alone can result in self-doubt, confusion and frustration. Those feelings are very common. And they risk stopping you in your tracks. With the fate of our language at stake; let's not do that!

That's why community is so critical: it's a place to get the support you need, when you need it. We believe anyone can learn to speak Chickasaw. And when you surround yourself with learners, and experts who share the same purpose, you stand a far greater chance of achieving success.

Our community exists for that reason; to be the go-to haven for aspiring Chickasaw speakers. We support learners at every step of their journeys. We're by their side; to help them stay unstuck, and unhindered, by providing proven programs, and opportunities to hone their budding language skills, with community interaction.

Our members...

unlock their growth potential.

Want to learn Chickasaw fast and efficiently? Our members know that when they get stuck, they are in a place where they can access the advice, and resources they need, to fly over hurdles, and unlock their growth potential.

When you join the community, you're welcomed into the group, with others who understand the difficulties you face, and come along side to share your language learning journey, giving you the best chance to stay encouraged and motivated, despite outside opposition.

Our members...

avoid common mistakes and setbacks.

There's a lot of opinions and false information out there, on how Chickasaw is spoken and written. But, achieving success is about having the right information. Don't risk common pitfalls and missteps. Tap into our proven programs, and forge ahead with confidence.

These kind words from members say it all

Lorene G., TX.

I came into this class feeling nervous and now I feel great and accomplished that I want to continue to learn more about the language. This is something that I can pass on to my family.

Kelsey W., GA.

I didn't understand how Chickasaw flows or how to put words together in an understandable way. (Now) I have a stronger grasp on Chickasaw and feel more connected to my culture.

Stacy C., UT.

(re: the program) It was really clear: very succinct. I found this...incredibly helpful...The flow of it felt really good of how things were presented.

I really liked it.

John H., Canada

I have been trying different methods for learning ...the past 10 years...I found it incredibly dispiriting...(In this course) I learned more my first few months than all my previous attempts combined.

Veronica W., Germany

I had done some Rosetta Stone...but... often left with more questions about how to say things than answers. The course showed that it actually could be possible to learn, speak, and preserve Chikashshanompa'...this...is an impeccable resource ...

Kelly M., CA.

The program is wonderful! The value of being able to communicate with other participants is always a good thing.

  • Which community is right for me?
The C.O.L.A. Community Pass is for anyone who wants to work at their own pace, at anytime of day or night, yet still wants the resources and network to keep progressing. This is a great option whether you're just starting out, or looking to grow your advanced skills. Space is unlimited, and always open to sign up. The Chickasaw Comprehension Pass is for those who want to become proficient and conversational in the shortest possible time frame, and can commit to the highly structured schedule of live courses. Classes meet online, Mondays and Thursdays, for one hour each session. Space is limited, and registration usually opens in January, and classes run through mid to late September, each year.
  • Am I too old to learn Chickasaw?
People often believe they are too old to learn Chickasaw. But, the truth is, some of our top students are in their 70’s! And they are making valuable contributions to save our language, by teaching their grandchildren and others what they've learned. Age isn't the deciding factor on ease of learning Chickasaw, it's the methods of teaching that matter. With our signature Chickasaw Comprehension course, learning to speak Chickasaw is nearly automatic…no matter your age. And learning another language in your senior years, has a profoundly positive impact on your cognitive health. It stimulates brain activity, can delay cognitive decline, enhances neuroplasticity, helps keep your mind agile and responsive, improves memory, and problem-solving skills, and helps you stay mentally sharp. We're sure this will work for you - and remember, We’ll be right there with you, leading you to success. For more information, check out this video on how language learning affects the brain.
  • Do I have to be "gifted" at language learning to learn Chickasaw?
If you’re just starting out on your journey to learn Chickasaw, and you’ve never learned another language before, you’re probably experiencing nervousness, and doubt, about your “giftedness” at language learning. The truth is, you don’t have to be “gifted” to learn Chickasaw. It's really a matter of the teaching method that makes all the difference. Just take each class one day at a time, and before you know it, you’ll be speaking Chickasaw, especially if you are in the Chickasaw Comprehension© courses, or attend live Fikfiya' Chat sessions in the C.O.L.A. Community. Did you know that if you only learn 10 nouns, 10 verbs and 10 adjectives, you can say 1000 things? Yeah, that’s a lot! Imagine how much you’ll be able to say!
  • I’ve had little success with other methods: will this work for me?
With our signature Chickasaw Comprehension© course, you’ll be conversational in only a few short weeks. It’s so much fun, that learning is nearly automatic. And, it’ll change everything about how you approach language learning. You’ll find you can learn much more than you thought you could. And chances are, you'll get to a point where you respond in Chickasaw, without needing to stop and think about it. If you're in the C.O.L.A. Community, then you'll want to make the most of attending the live Fikfiya' Chat sessions, whenever possible. That way, you can work on your speaking skills, as you work through the grammar at your own pace. It's a slower option to conversational, but the knowledge you gain is invaluable. And, you can always plan to register for the Chickasaw Comprehension© course when you're ready. Either way, you'll still be growing at a steady pace!
  • Do I have to live in Oklahoma to become fluent in Chickasaw?
Because our courses and communities are online, you can learn to speak Chickasaw no matter where you live! We've had students join from all across the U.S., Canada, and even Europe. The truth is: at this time, there are only about 2 dozen elders that speak Chickasaw remaining, so most people don't have access to an elder even if they live in Oklahoma. In fact, for this reason, even people who work for the Chickasaw Nation have joined our courses. And you don't need to learn every Chickasaw word to be fluent. You only need to be able to talk about things that are important to you! "The ability to speak freely, is fluency." ~Seely & Romijn
  • What if I get stuck, will I be able to get help?
Yes! This is one of the great features of being in our community. You're never alone! If you are in the C.O.L.A. Community, you can take advantage of the regular "Office Hours," or the Community Group, to ask your questions, and stay unstuck! If you are in the Chickasaw Comprehension community, then you'll have the opportunity twice a week, to get the help you need during our live sessions, or reach out to fellow students in your Community Group.
  • Can I switch the Community I am in?
Because the C.O.L.A. Community is ongoing, year round, and the Chickasaw Comprehension Community is 9 months of the year, they are two separate subscriptions. If you are in the C.O.L.A. Community, and want to register for the Chickasaw Comprehension Community, you'll have two subscriptions going at the same time. However, if it makes more financial sense for you, you're welcome to cancel your C.O.L.A. Community subscription until you've completed the Chickasaw Comprehension© Course, and then re-subscribe to the C.O.L.A. Community at a later time. If you are in the Chickasaw Comprehension Community, and want to join the C.O.L.A. Community in the off season to keep your skills up during the break, you could subscribe in October, and cancel your subscription at the end of December, when you're ready to register for the next level of the Chickasaw Comprehension© Course.
  • Do you have a refund policy?
The C.O.L.A. Community subscription, is non-refundable, but members are welcome to cancel their subscription at anytime. The Chickasaw Comprehension Community includes live classes. The refund policy is consistent with most other live, online language classes. Cancellations prior to the first week of class are refunded at 90%, or the full amount is credited toward a future enrollment. No refunds will be issued after classes begin.
  • What if I need to pause or cancel my C.O.L.A. Community subscription?
We don't have a pause subscription option, but members of the C.O.L.A. Community, are welcome to cancel their subscriptions whenever they need to, and re-subscribe at a later time.
  • Is there an age requirement?
A parent or legal guardian of anyone under the age of 18, must complete the sign-up on behalf of the minor. And the legal guardian must agree to, and ensure, that the minor abides by our Terms of Service and Polices. For more information see our Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and Mission/Policy . For the Chickasaw Comprehension Community, enrollees must be at least 16 years old. For the C.O.L.A. Community, it is recommended that the minor be at least 14 years old. In order to revitalize the Chickasaw language, and be removed from the highly endangered language list at UNESCO, Chickasaw children need to learn our language. We are happy to see young people and homeschoolers interested in joining our programs. The goal of our Terms of Service and Policies is to ensure the most positive experience for all participants, especially those under the age of 18. However, parents and legal guardians are still responsible for the safety, and conduct, of their minors inside our communities.
  • Can I join even if I'm not Chickasaw, or a Chickasaw tribal citizen?
Yes! Over the years, we've had a number of unenrolled Chickasaws, as well as spouses and friends of the Chickasaw join our programs. Our non-Chickasaw participants provide additional community members to practice speaking Chickasaw with. We are happy to hear you are interested in helping revitalize our language!
  • Are your communities inclusive?
Chickasaw Online Language Arts (“COLA”) seeks to make the learning environment, a non-divisive, non-imposing place, to stay focused on the important mission of revitalizing the Chickasaw language. While everyone is welcome to join, it is important to be aware that, COLA’s mission does not engage in social or political activism, that is adverse to the preservation of the Chickasaw language. For more information see our Mission/Policy
  • What is the Chickasaw Online Language Arts Pronoun Policy?
The Chickasaw language, is an ancient language, that contains a number of emphatic pronouns, and pronoun affixes, as well as words that are exclusively used by, or to address, one of the two genders/sexes recognized by the Chickasaw language: that being male or female. Therefore, in the academic setting of our courses/programs/communities, each participant is referred to in the singular sense, and according to their biological gender/sex determined at birth. Thank you for cooperating, with the preservation of the purity, of the ancient Chickasaw language. For more information see our Mission/Policy
  • Can I get academic credit for the language courses?
Each participant who completes a course, and fills out the course evaluation, is awarded a Certificate of Completion, with the credit hours for World Language Study, listed on the certificate. While our programs are unaccredited, our credit hours have been accepted by Homeschoolers, and Colleges, on a case by case basis. Those interested in using our course credit hours, need to consult with their college advisor, or Homeschool association if applicable in your state.
  • What can I expect after joining?
The best time ever! An onboarding email will be delivered to your inbox, so you know what to do when you log-in to the website. But here's the most important expectation: you have to put in the time to get the most out of the community experience. This is not a magic bullet, but rather an opportunity to learn and grow with your peers.
  • Do you offer discounts?
We do not offer discounts. We've priced our communities to ensure we are providing outstanding value.
  • I have a product or service I want to share with your community. Can I do that?
We have a strict no-selling policy in all our communities, and will remove anyone found soliciting customers.
  • My question isn't on this list. How can I ask my question?
Send your question to info@chickasawonlinelanguagearts.com and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
